The Use of Anticonvulsants in Psychiatry


Abstract
Although the mechanism of psychotropic effect of anticonvulsants remains unclear. There is increasing evidences of its value in different psychiatric disorders such as affective disorders. Schizophrenia. Alcohol abuse and dyscontrol syndromes.
The number of prescriptions written by psychiatrists for anticonvulsants. Particulary carbamazepine, has greatly increased over the last 8-12 years. Also the number of publications in psychiatric literature conceming anticonvulsants has
dramatically
increased over recent years.
The most important of anticonvulsants currently used in psychiatry are carbamazepine. Valproic acid and clonazopam. Amog these. carbamazepine have become the most used treatment for bipolar disorder when lithium is either ineffective or
contraindicated.
In addition to carbamazepine. There is also emerging evidence that valproic acid. Clonazepam and other anticonvulsants are effective in affectively ill patients.
In fact, it would be possible that the use of anticonvulsants in psychiatry will continue to expand greately over the coming years as the definite and clear indications for clinical use become confirmed by further double blind placebo controlled
trials
and psychiatrists become familiar with and comfortable about their use.
